Biomedical engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes (e.g. diagnostic or therapeutic). Biomedical engineering continues to make the future, not just respond to the present, by anticipating needs that interface engineering and clinical medicine. This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine, combining the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance health care treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy.

The first step for establishing the Biomedical Engineering department in the faculty of electrical and computer engineering was taken in 2014 offering a choice of study in the field of bioelectric leading to the degree of M.Sc. The first BME M.Sc. student at university of Tabriz was graduated in the summer of 2015. Currently, the biomedical group enjoys the collaboration of 5 academic staff to carry a total of 22 full time students.
